Let battle commence…

Image editing software can be expensive, very expensive. While there are fully featured open source office applications such as Open Office which make one wonder why users continue to pay for Word and Excel, Photoshop and it’s partner programmes have maintained a leading position for many years. Admittedly they have recognised that some students will need the fully featured programmes rather than the stripped down and considerably cheaper Elements programmes and their student discounts are sizeable (and available to OCA students).

Now things may be about to get interesting. The online editing tool Sumo Print announced this week that they have added a curves tool, the benchmark tool for careful editing. There is still a way to go on file formats but in the meantime, sit back and suspend your disbelief:

This is a very interesting development! Adobe have had their own online version of Photoshop available for a while now but Sumo Paint beats that into a cocked hat! I notice that there is a paid for version which allows you to download the app to use like Photoshop (I suspect it also opens up the range of fileformats available too), but the cost is quite reasonable.

The speed of this app is astounding – I had assumed the video was speeded up to make it look more impressive; but it actually does run at a good speed, even on my slow connection.

At the very least, this type of app should be causing Adobe to wobble in their boots; it’s about time the big boys of publishing had some serious free competition!
