‘Your flickr subscription is about to expire…’

February 16, 2010
By Gareth

Oh dear, there is that sinking feeling again. An email that announces more expense. In my case I joined flickr to post photographs to a blog I was writing at the time and Blogger didn’t host photographs – difficult to imagine now. What I found is that the blogging didn’t maintain my interest and flickr became an obsession, almost an addiction. I needed to post  new photographs on a daily basis and would check back even more frequently for comments. I now have the habit under control and I don’t regret the obsessive period. I got to meet some fabulous people, lots of fabulous people and some of them have become lasting friends.

What interests me now is how the web is changing photography. One fascinating dimension is the incorporation of audio and photography into web multi-media. The addition of a narrative has the potential to slow the viewer, forcing them to contemplate the image. Papers like the Guardian and the New York Times have many good examples on their websites, but the best exponents I have found so far are the oddly named DuckRabbit who are also a training organisation. Check out this example – you will believe vegetables are interesting.

    Thanks Gareth, interesting indeed!
Ended up watching it a few times, because every time you seem to notice something different.

    Something new to try.

Glad you liked it Dewald. I think there is real potential in the technique for OCA presenting student work. Students often ask us for examples of assessment portfolios. We have asked Duckrabbit to produce a audio slideshow of one of graduating photographers, and if this is interesting and helpful to students we will extend the idea further.
