Oil

Good news from the Photographers’ Gallery. They have announced both a re-opening date and the first exhibitions in their enlarged premises. I am particularly excited that we will get the opportunity to see Oil by Edward Burtynsky.

We first blogged about Oil almost exactly two years ago, and as students who will have recently experienced the, arguably related, Mitch Epstein American Power work at the Open Eye Gallery, this is a body of work which really needs to be experienced face to print. Personally I agree with Paul Roth, curator at Washington’s Corcoran Gallery when he says that ‘Burtynsky, takes us to places we have never seen, places we were perhaps never meant to see and he shows us a world which has incredible importance in our lives‘ The scale of the work can be seen in this video

We will be arranging a study visit to the Photographer’s Gallery in the near future and announcing details in the weekly eBulletin.

Looks very interesting – I hope to be able to make the study visit. I saw one of Burtynsky’s pictures at the RA Summer Exhibition. It was very striking but I found it a bit difficult to appreciate it as just one more among all those other diverse images. It will be good to see a series of his work.

When is the study visit, has it been announced yet?

Not yet Lerpy – it will be in the second half of May or early June, but we are still planning it in so it will probably be the end of February before we confirm the date.

His documentary “Manufactured Landscapes” is fantastic from photographic and eco /humanitarian responsibilities perspectives. His images are huge & their impact reflects that.

This would be a great exhibition to see. I bought the book last year and particularly enjoyed it (I work in the Oil & Gas industry). Look forward to hearing how the study visit goes (I won’t be attending from Brisbane…)
