Anna Fox Artist Talk

Yesterday OCA photography students were treated to an excellent talk by Anna Fox which covered her influences, the origins of selected work and her current practice. Anna was very generous with her time, answering questions from the audience as she spoke. Mark captured the whole talk on video and we will make this available to watch in the student site shortly. In the meantime if students attending are blogging their refections please post a comment with a link below.
[Group photo by Amano. Anna is in the middle of the second row. Mark appears to have disappeared, the only sign of his presence being the rather large video camera top right.]

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the talk. This is the second time I’ve listened to Anna speak so I wasn’t surprised by any of her concepts or working practices. What I did come to realise since hearing her nearly three years ago, was how much more of what she said has become relevant and understandable. I must be learning something! Having just started Documentary, a lot of her work fell into place for me as I went through her website.
( comment cut and pasted from the Facebook OCA Photography Students page in case you think it sounds familiar)
I’ll be blogging in more detail on my learning log in due course.

  • I must have been at a different talk although I am in the photograph. How you can describe something as ‘excellent’ when the technical presentation was appalling? This also seemed to be the opinion of Anna Fox who was unable to correct the problems and towards the end left us all in the dark (the lights went out). There is very little point in projecting images for the audience to see and then point out that the colours are wrong. Whilst we had the opportunity to view the same images in Anna’s books they (the books) were passed round in a dimly lit auditorium which was not the best way to see her work. I had perused her web site before the meeting and did so on return home so had an opportunity to recognise how good they are.
I have blogged my initial reaction but intend to separately blog on the issues raised in the talk. (cdsherwoodap.blogspot.com)
It was drummed into me during my training as a public speaker and lecturer to ensure that everything worked before the lecture and have sufficient technical know how to overcome any problems – or have a competent technician available throughout the talk. Anything else was more than likely to annoy and frustrate your audience.

    • I was referring to the content of her talk Cedric. Admittedly the presentation of the work was undermined by the projection issues, but I still found the content fascinating. I thought her discussion of the differences between documentary and reportage was thoughtful and convincing – I rather gathered that you were less convinced but hopefully if gave you something to think about.
Believe me I have been to plenty of highly polished presentations which have been almost entirely devoid of content…

  • I haven’t had time to get my thoughts committed yet – too busy with other things – but I too thought that the talk was excellent and inspiring – yes PowerPoint disappointed, but it hardly ever Excels 🙂 , unlike Anna’s generosity with her time and thoughts.

  • A video of the Anna Fox talk is now available to watch in the ‘Photographers Talking’ area of the Photography Forum in the student site here.
