Dear Patric, I read your article about the dangers of a Culture of Celebrity.
Of course you are right: the celebrity is a show off, driven by narcissism, and at best a mimic.
The composer, like all artists, is driven from within to find their own truth expresed in a new language of something we have come to call Art; but whose psychocultural origins lie in myth, ritual and worship of the sacred.
This truth seeking through image, story or music making is compulsive. It takes hold of the artistic psyche,
out of both personal experience, and on occasions from a numinous archetypal source. You will be familiar with many quotes from famous composers, describing themselves as a mouthpiece serving a higher voice .
This personal vs archetypal inspirational impulse to creativity,is the the basis of my planned Thesis integrating my lifelong interests of Music, Psychology and Psychotherapy.
This profound impulse to creativity is a long way from the trivial exhibitionism of the celebrity.
Warmest regards
Simon Dermody
